JOBS
Postdoctoral Researcher – Shaner Lab, UC San Diego
A postdoctoral research position is immediately available in the Shaner Lab at UCSD to develop and optimize genetically encoded fluorescent and bioluminescent sensors tailored for marine model organisms. This position is part of the Allen Discovery Center for Neurobiology in Changing Environments (ADC-NiCE), a pioneering and transdisciplinary center that investigates how marine animals’ nervous systems respond to climate change-related stressors.
Research Focus in the Shaner Lab: Our lab specializes in the directed evolution, protein engineering, and structure-guided optimization of fluorescent and bioluminescent proteins to create novel optical probes and biosensors. Our goal within ADC-NiCE is to leverage these cutting-edge molecular tools to understand neurobiological adaptations of four key marine model species to environmental challenges. We work closely with a collaborative network of marine biologists, neuroscientists, and engineers to address fundamental questions about organismal resilience and adaptation to rapidly changing ecosystems.
We seek a highly motivated candidate with expertise in molecular biology, protein engineering, fluorescence microscopy, or bioluminescent probe development. The successful candidate will lead projects focused on sensor design, validation, and optimization in marine organisms, contributing significantly to the interdisciplinary goals of ADC-NiCE.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in molecular biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, bioengineering, or a closely related field.
- Recent Ph.D. graduates preferred (within two years of degree conferment).
- Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications, especially first-author manuscripts and/or pre-prints
- Experience with protein engineering techniques, including directed evolution, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing, or other genetic manipulation methods.
- Strong skills in fluorescence microscopy, live-cell imaging, or bioluminescent assays.
- Bioinformatics or computational biology skills are advantageous.
- Interest in developing new methodologies and contributing to resource sharing within the broader scientific community.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to collaborative and interdisciplinary research.
To Apply: Please email Dr. Nathan Shaner (ncshaner@health.ucsd.edu) the following documents compiled into a single PDF:
- A cover letter detailing previous research experiences and interests.
- Curriculum vitae, including a full list of publications.
- A brief (less than one page) statement outlining potential research projects aligning with ADC-NiCE objectives and career aspirations.
- Contact information for three professional references.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
